First 5K tomorrow!

I have my first 5K tomorrow… the Henry Vilas Zoo Run Run! I’m getting nervous.  And excited!

I knew I would be going grocery shopping around dinner time, and didn’t want to shop hungry, so I had a bit of granola before I left:

IMG_3029“Last Taste of Summer” from MixMyGranola.com.  French Vanilla Granola + Dried Raspberries + Dried Strawberries, with a bit of Vanilla Soy Milk.   See how cute and little the dried berries are?  Delicious, too. 🙂

I made a little trip to Whole Foods.  I’ve decided that in the future I need to also go to Copp’s or something for basics like milk and tortillas, where they are actually affordable!  I did, however, get to use my Chobani coupon!  It was kind of a fun experiment, to see what I could get at a reasonable price.  So for instance, while I skipped milk and tortillas, I did get some good Greek yogurt to eat with my cereal instead, and a few bagels, which I haven’t had in ages!

I felt like a quick and light dinner:

IMG_3033Green beans and carrots, sauteed in canola oil, mustard seeds, allspice, and coriander.

IMG_3037Baba ganoush with pita chips. I had a few more pita chips than pictured here because my dip to chip ratio was way off.  Oops!  Now I know, though, to NOT get the additional chips by bringing the bag to the table, but to just put a few on my plate.  Otherwise, I’ll eat way too many of these delicious things!

IMG_3040The last of the strawberries and Concord grapes from the Farmer’s Market last weekend.  The strawberries were great, but I only ate about 3 grapes.  At that point, I noticed that there was a spider web in the middle of the bunch, and a spider was crawling across my plate.  I naturally freaked out, and that was the end of the grapes.  Luckily none of the ones I ate were touching the spider web.  I still feel incredibly ick about it though… trying not to think about it!

All together:

Wish me luck!

Dear Dane County Farmer’s Market

Dear Dane County Farmer’s Market,

I love you.  Only by coming to you can I get both a 5-mile walk and this amount of produce (all grown in Wisconsin, mind you):

IMG_3024for just this:

  • 4 bell peppers             = $1.00
  • 4 summer squash      = $1.00
  • 3 peaches                    =$3.50
  • 1 cantaloupe               =$1.00
  • 1 butternut squash    =$1.50
  • 1 pumpkin                  =$2.00
  • 2 eggplants                 =$2.00

Grand total… $12.00.  That’s right, $12.00.  I will miss your bounty of produce come winter, Farmer’s Market.

Sincerely,  Julie @savvyeats

Dan’s mom is visiting today, so I came home after the Farmer’s Market to shower, bake banana bread, and clean!  Okay, the banana bread was perhaps not a pressing need, but the bananas were starting to attract fruit flies, so I wanted to use them.  Pronto.

I used Kath’s recipe, minus the walnuts and chocolate chips.  Delicious with a little bit of almond butter, by the way!

We decided to go to Bluephie’s in Madison.  This is the place that makes the chocolate chip cookie dough egg rolls that we are serving at our wedding instead of cake.

I decided to go a healthier route than the eggrolls today. 🙂   IMG_3025A cup of white bean-vegetable soup (without the crackers)

IMG_3027The southwestern crab cake salad. Minus the goat cheese it was supposed to come with.  I ate one of the two crab cakes and about half the veggies — saving the rest for later!  It was my first time trying jicama, which I’ve been wanting to try since reading about it here.

And finally,

IMG_3026An orange tea.  Unsweetened. And sideways, apparently… :-/

Don’t be fooled by the beer glass, it really is orange tea!

I was still a little hungry when we got home, so I gave in and had some of my banana bread.  With almond butter.  Perfect dessert!

IMG_3028I am abnormally excited to go grocery shopping today.  Really, I am. I’m so excited to try some new recipes (Pumpkin Curry Soup?  Recreating Squash Curry? Falafel?), and want to get the ingredients I need for them!  Grocery shopping is my favorite errand ever!  Based on the comments on Kelly’s post, I’m not alone 🙂

Coming Soon….

Hey all,

I needed a break last night (I was seriously exhausted!), but I will tell you that I went out for the most amazing Squash Curry ever with some friends last night!

I’ll be back with a love letter to the Farmer’s Market and details of a trip to one of our favorite restaurants this afternoon.  For now, I need to go shower and clean up the apartment a bit before Dan’s mom gets here!
